No one expected the Minnesota Vikings to start the new NFL season this hot, especially after losing Kirk Cousins months ago. Thanks to their impressive performance on the field, they are now climbing up ESPN’s Power Rankings after Week 3.
The Vikings have made a strong statement early in the season, establishing themselves as serious contenders for the playoffs. After a convincing victory over the Houston Texans, who were among the top Super Bowl favorites, the Vikings showcased their capabilities, bolstered by a previous win against the 49ers.

With a 3-0 record, the Vikings are drawing attention from betting markets, yet some still underestimate their potential. Their odds to win the NFC North have improved significantly, reflecting the team’s strong performance metrics. Unlike last season, when their record didn’t align with their statistics, this year’s numbers support their success across various categories, including PFF grades, DVOA, and point differential.
Defensively, the Vikings have shown significant improvement under coordinator Brian Flores, utilizing more man coverage and effectively disguising their schemes. This strategy has resulted in the league’s highest sack total so far. Offensively, quarterback Sam Darnold is performing at a high level, ranking among the top quarterbacks in key metrics despite facing considerable pressure.
Minnesota Vikings Climbs Up ESPN’s NFL Power Rankings After Week 3

Last week, the Vikings placed 11th in ESPN’s Power Ranking. After their big Week 3 win, the team has now jumped to the third spot, as seen in an analysis by Kevin Seifert.
Week 3 ranking: 11
Biggest issue on offense: Right guard play
There haven’t been many issues for a team that ranks fourth in the NFL in both scoring (26 points per game) and overall offensive efficiency (72.03). But if we’re nitpicking, the Vikings continue to cover for subpar play from right guard Ed Ingram.
Through three weeks, Ingram ranks 54th in pass block win rate (82%) and 44th in run block win rate (68.1%) among guards. The Vikings could mix in veteran Dalton Risner when he is activated from injured reserve, but if the worst thing you can say about an offense is that one interior offensive lineman is underperforming, you’re probably in pretty good shape.
The Vikings’ success is well-rounded, with contributions from both offense and defense. They’ve excelled in red zone efficiency and third-down conversions, making them a challenging opponent to prepare for. With the return of key players like Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson on the horizon, the team’s prospects look even brighter.

As they continue to build momentum, the Vikings are reshaping expectations and positioning themselves for a strong playoff run. Their impressive start has sparked excitement among fans and players alike, hinting at a potentially special season ahead.
