The Minnesota Vikings are going to be a very intriguing team to watch this offseason.
First and foremost, they will need to figure out what they’re going to do at the quarterback position. Sam Darnold is a free agent after putting together a big season in 2024, but they also have J.J. McCarthy waiting for playing time.
That decision will be one of the first that they need to make. After that, they’ll need to focus on improving the rest of the team.
With both Stephon Gilmore and Byron Murphy Jr. set to become free agents this offseason, the Vikings will need to figure out how to replenish their talent in the secondary. One intriguing name has been suggested as a possible target.
Minnesota Vikings Linked to Major 2025 Free Agency Defensive Back
Nick Shook of NFL.com has suggested that the Minnesota Vikings could consider pursuing New York Jets free agent cornerback D.J. Reed as a potential target.
“Brian Flores maximized the return on his defense in 2024, winning with scheme and aggression over talent. He got solid play from Stephon Gilmore and Byron Murphy last season, but both are scheduled to hit free agency in the coming weeks, and Gilmore will be 35 years old in September,” Shook wrote.
“Getting younger with a proven corner like D.J. Reed, who is just 28, makes plenty of sense. He likely won’t command top tier money and so he should give the Vikings the most bang for their buck, allowing them to spend their estimated $63 million in cap space wherever else they want.”
During the 2024 season with the Jets, Reed put together a strong all-around year. He played in 14 games, racking up 64 tackles, a sack, and 11 defended passes. He has only recorded six interceptions in 101 career games, but he’s known for being a good tackler and being solid in coverage.
At 28 years old, Reed would give the Minnesota Vikings an option for the present and years to come.
Expect to hear a lot of rumors surrounding the Vikings this offseason. Don’t be surprised if Reed ends up being a player that they show interest in.
