The Minnesota Vikings are going into the 2024 with a new era starting under center. Kirk Cousin’s abrupt departure left Minnesota scrambling to find a starting quarterback. They decided on veteran Sam Darnold and rookie JJ McCarthy.
However, it appears to be the Darnold show for the foreseeable future.
The Minnesota Vikings Announce Devastating Season Ending Injury News
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter:
ESPN Sources: surgery on J.J. McCarthy’s torn meniscus revealed that a repair was necessary and the Vikings rookie quarterback now will miss the 2024 season. While the Vikings are disappointed, they “strongly believe he will come back better and have a long, successful NFL career”, as one team official said. But rookie season is over.
The type of surgery McCarthy needed to repair his knee affected his retrun. McCarthy would have missed 4-6 weeks if he had not needed a full mensicus repair but rather a trim. 4-6 months are required for a full repair.
The Vikings have had a tumultuous time finding a franchise quarterback in recent memory:
- 2016: Teddy Bridgewater suffers serious non-contact knee injury before the start of the regular season. 2
- 023: Kirk Cousins ruptures his Achilles in Week 8.
- 2024: First-round rookie J.J. McCarthy suffers meniscus injury in first preseason game that requires surgery and ends his rookie season.
We will see how Minnesota rebounds this time.
