The Minnesota Vikings are in the midst of one of the unluckiest offseasons a team has endured in recent memory.
In a time that spans just over a month, the Vikings have had several things happen that could easily define any other team’s entire season.
The Minnesota Vikings could not have planned for the misfortune they encountered
Among a list of things that have happened to the Vikings this offseason, the most shocking and unfortunate is the death of rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson.
The Vikings selected Jackson, an Oregon Ducks product, in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Jackson proceeded to die in a car crash, cutting his life short just before his 25th birthday.
No matter how meticulous the Vikings were when doing their research on Jackson before taking him with the No. 108 overall pick, they could not have anticipated that Jackson would die in a car accident.
Jackson’s death had a massive effect on the morale and operation of the team on a day-to-day basis, throwing a wrench into how the Vikings or any other team would usually prepare for an NFL season. Not only does Jackson’s death affect the team for personal and emotional reasons, but it completely wastes the Vikings’ fourth-round pick.
While the effect on the roster was the least of the NFL world’s worries regarding Jackson’s death, it is a hole in the roster and the development process that the team was forced to address. Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell talked about how Jackson’s death affected him in an article from Sports Illustrated.
“Khyree, I fell in love with the kid from the standpoint of his journey ––it’s been well documented–– his path of ultimately getting to Alabama after being at the junior college level and then going to Oregon and having so much success. This kid was so ready for the runway that was out in front of him. I had no doubt he was going to have a huge impact on our team this year and many many years to come,” O’Connell said.
The Minnesota Vikings have had terrible injury luck and trouble with the law
On top of Jackson’s death, the Vikings are suffering through terrible injury luck as well as trouble with the law. Two starting cornerbacks, Shaq Griffin and Mekhi Blackmon, were injured during camp.
Blackmon tore his ACL on the first day of practice while Griffin managed to escape a significant season-ending injury, as O’Connell explained in an article from the Vikings website.
“He’s dealing with a left leg soft-tissue [injury],” Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell told media members Saturday. “We’re kind of monitoring him and making sure, whether he’s day-to-day, or it might be a week or so this early in camp.
“We’ll get him back, get him with [Vice President of Player Health and Performance] Tyler [Williams] and the group, and hopefully we can get him back sooner rather than later. But I’ll keep you guys posted on his timeline,” O’Connell added.
On the other side of the ball, first-round quarterback J.J. McCarthy will be having surgery on his torn meniscus after just one preseason game. McCarthy will not be out for the whole season, but he will miss significant rookie reps, giving way for journeyman Sam Darnold to be the starter at the beginning of the 2024 season.
Outside of injuries, star up-and-coming wide receiver Jordan Addison, who is set to complement one of the best wide receivers in the league in Justin Jefferson, was hit with a DUI.
Addison could face up to six months in jail for being caught asleep behind the wheel, blocking traffic near the Los Angeles International Airport.
Minnesota Vikings fans are lamenting their poor luck on social media
Longtime Vikings fans are no stranger to misfortune. They continue to lament the misfortune clouding this offseason as they prepare for another season wherein making the playoffs will be an extremely tall task.
Minnesota won’t just be dealing with their own misfortune, but they will have to do so in an NFC North division that is shaping up to be incredibly difficult. The Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions both won a playoff game in 2023 and did not take any steps back in terms of major roster moves or coaching losses.
The Chicago Bears are heading into 2024 with one of the best situations surrounding a No. 1 overall pick in recent memory. They’ve added veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen and No. 9 overall pick D.J. Moore to compliment the backfield combination of No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams and new running back DeAndre Swift.
A revamped offense pushes the Bears into wildcard team territory, and they will likely be a step behind the Packers and the Lions. This leaves the Vikings at the bottom, with one of the most difficult paths to the playoffs combined with a terrifyingly unfortunate offseason.
