The Minnesota Vikings are 14-2 this season and they are preparing to face the Detroit Lions (14-2) on Sunday night football. Minnesota has a chance to either be the number-one seed in the NFC or they will have to head on the road in the postseason.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke to the media on Monday. One of the biggest stories for the Vikings this season has been quarterback Sam Darnold. Another story for Minnesota this season was signing quarterback Daniel Jones to the practice squad over a month ago.
Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell Provides Major Daniel Jones Update On Monday
On Monday, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke to the media. He mentioned to reporters that Daniel Jones could be getting activated to the 53-man roster ahead of the Detroit Lions matchup. O’Connell said to reporters:
“We’re gonna have some dialogue about that as far as the timing of it. Daniel has been quietly behind the scenes putting in some phenomenal work. All stuff to be talked about. … While also Daniel kind of being on his own individual plan.”
Daniel Jones was released by the New York Giants earlier this NFL season. For now, the Vikings’ backup quarterback is Nick Mullens and the third-string quarterback right now is Brett Rypien. Jones potentially being the backup quarterback for the Vikings for the Lions game could be a big story for Minnesota.
J.J. McCarthy Been Out All Season
At the start of the pre-season, rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy was competing with Sam Darnold for the starting job. McCarthy tore his meniscus during the preseason. This helped Darnold win the starting job and he has played extremely well this season.
It led to Nick Mullens being the Vikings’ backup quarterback. Also, Minnesota didn’t expect Daniel Jones to be released this season. Signing him to the practice squad could benefit his career. If Jones is not elevated this week to the 53-man roster, it probably will not happen during the postseason.
