Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy did not practice on Monday night. On Tuesday, it was announced by head coach Kevin O’Connell that he will undergo a procedure for a torn meniscus in his right knee.
This is a huge blow for the Vikings as he had a positive first preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders. J.J. McCarthy against the Raiders completed 11-of-17 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. McCarthy helped the Vikings overcome a 20-7 halftime deficit to win 24-23 on Saturday.
He was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan. J.J. McCarthy was projected to be the backup to Sam Darnold to start the 2024 season.
Minnesota Vikings Fans React To the J.J. McCarthy News
The Vikings fans reacted to the news of McCarthy getting hurt on Twitter. This is what some of them had to say about it on Twitter:
We can never have anything good

Smart decision. It sucks but better to get it out of the way now than to play through pain and make it 10x worse

This is OKAY. Darnold is setup for success as well and this will let McCarthy heal before it gets really bad.
I’d like to think that if he didn’t get this surgery now, the knee would come back to haunt him in an NFC Championship game 8 years from now.

He’s the future for Minnesota. No reason to rush him this season especially with a knee concern.

With McCarthy being out, Darnold will be the starter and Nick Mullens will be the Minnesota Vikings’ backup quarterback for the time being. McCarthy is only 21 years old and there is no need to rush his development, Will they keep only those two on the roster other than J.J. McCarthy or will they do something else?
Vikings May Keep Jaren Hall Around
With McCarthy out with his injury, Jaren Hall is the fourth quarterback on the roster. They may keep Hall on the roster until McCarthy returns from his injury. Some other NFL teams may want Hall on their roster, so it is something to keep an eye on for the Vikings moving forward.
Jaren Hall was a rookie last season and used to play for the BYU Cougars in college. He started for the Vikings late in the season last year against the Green Bay Packers and his start did not go well for them.
