Michigan has another problem with the addition of USC and UCLA.
The Michigan Wolverines have gained two new threats in the conference and both have significant pedigrees behind them. While officially neither USC or UCLA will be going head to head with the Wolverines until 2024, they are now a confirmed threat.
USC brings with them arguably one of the best college coaches of all time. UCLA though not nearly as prolific as the Trojans where is still an instant contender. Even if both teams only rabble rouse the chances for Michigan to take a Big 10 are lessened.
The snowball might become an avalanche
As reported before Michigan has seen some significant recruiting woes. Meanwhile other Big 10 contenders are picking up significant signings. There has been some good news but right now it does not outweigh the bad. If the Wolverines do not learn and learn quickly, they have two years, USC and UCLA can and likely will pull more recruits from being Michigan Men.
Additionally, the scheduling is going to be very very interesting. This effects all of the Big 10. Long trips are ahead for the boys in Blue that they are not particularly accustomed to. This little wrinkle should be interesting to watch play out.
Lastly, is the very real potential that these moves prompt others to do the same. The Big 10 is one of the financially strongest in the nation, it just got stronger. The PAC 12 just took a big hit as well. Could we see Oregon join? Washington? That is a possibility, and that’s just with the remaining members. Oregon is already looking to leave according to rumors, as are ACC teams. No solid news but, the Big 10 could become the premier super conference.
The Silver Lining
Lets just for a moment say all of this happens, the Pac 12 bleeds teams, and the ACC sees their stronger teams decide to go for greener pastures. Yes, greener means money here and the BIG 10 is BIG on that. The old adage of Iron sharpens Iron comes up here. Yes Michigan will have a lot more to contend with. Yes this will make them a better stronger team. Yes, this could force Michigan to adapt faster. All of those are good things. Even better, lets say it does, and lets say Michigan comes out on top.
A grizzled, battle hardened Wolverines team going into the playoffs having seen things from coast to coast? There are few things more dangerous than a rolling Michigan Wolverines team. Give it the extra experience to contend with the SEC powerhouses? Everyone wins.
