The Michigan Panthers Signed Brian Lewerke to a New Deal.
The UFL’s Michigan Panthers said goodbye to one of their top quarterbacks, Davis Cheek. In March 2024 Cheek was placed on the retired list. The search for a new quarterback began and was soon done when Michigan decided to sign Brian Lewerke.
Lewerke was released by the Michigan Panthers just two weeks prior to being called back with a new deal. He was cut in the first round of training camp roster although he spent the previous year as a backup for the Panthers.
Lewerke’s football career speaks to why the Panthers brought him back on. He was a former Michigan State quarterback who was a starter for three seasons.
He also had his time with the New England Patriots as well as the New York Giants.
His Michigan State stats speak for themselves and demonstrate why he would be a great asset to the Panthers.
At Michigan State, Lewerke threw for 8,293 yards and 47 touchdowns to 32 interceptions in 41 career games.
The Michigan Panthers’ other quarterbacks include E.J. Perry and Danny Etling. With three quarterbacks, it will be interesting to see who will be the starter although many suspect Perry to start.
Lewerke being on the practice teams for the New England Patriots and the New York Giants provided him with experience, insight, and drive.
Lewerke being cut was not due to a lack of ability to be successful with the team.
Brian Lewerke being cut from the Panthers came down to needing to cut down the team roster from 58 to 50. With already having E.J. Perry and Danny Etling, and originally Davis Cheek, Lewerke was not a main priority.
Once Davis was put on the retirement list, Michigan needed Lewerke back.
The Michigan Panthers know the qualities and talent Lewerke brings to the field so they gave him a call back.
As the season is one game in, there is plenty of time to see the work Lewerke has been putting in during his time with the Panthers.

Brian Lewerke securing his spot on the Michigan Panthers gives him another chance at showcasing his quarterback skills.
If Lewerke were able to increase his quickness during the season’s practice, there is a chance he could start in this season’s games.
