Last season, the Michigan football program collected their tenth title in program history. However, the championship-winning season did not come without its fair share of criticism, with the Michigan Wolverines dealing with a sign-stealing scandal late in the season that resulted in a three-game suspension for head coach Jim Harbaugh. The NCAA is still looking into the alleged violations, but Michigan has primarily sidestepped the harsher penalties, including vacating any victories from the undefeated campaign (knock on wood, UM fans).
Despite the Wolverines being the reigning college football champions, non-UM loyalists quickly jump on the team whenever presented with an opportunity. On Friday, the program’s social media page posted a graphic, which they later deleted, with fans believing it referenced Hurricane Helene, the natural disaster wrecking the country’s southeast.
Fans Enraged Following Controversial Michigan Football Post
According to On3 via Twitter:
Michigan deleted its Week 5 game poster amid backlash for Hurricane Helene reference.
The graphic, posted by Michigan football’s official Twitter page, shows a man outfitted in a team jersey standing on a football field submerged in water. Michigan deleted the post shortly after Hurricane Helene continued to cause horrific damage across parts of the United States. This Saturday, the Michigan Wolverines will host the Minnesota Golden Gophers following a massive ranked win against the USC Trojans last weekend.
Following the deletion of the poster, prominent college football outlet On3 repurposed it, sharing it with their near-quarter of a million followers. Fans quickly jumped on the school, blasting them for their inability to understand the devastating situation occurring in the southeast portion of the country:
