Last season, behind the leadership of quarterback J.J. McCarthy, the Michigan football went undefeated and won their tenth title in program history. Just one year later, the Michigan Wolverines have a new head coach/quarterback combo, with a repeat undefeated season becoming obsolete following last week’s blowout home loss against the Texas Longhorns. As for McCarthy’s successor, Davis Warren, his first season as the Wolverines’ signal-caller has not gone as planned, with the junior struggling with turnovers.
On Saturday, with Michigan football stumbling at home against the Arkansas State Red Wolves, head coach Sherrone Moore opted to bench Warren in favor of dual-threat passer Alex Orji. Michigan fended off a late Arkansas State comeback, but Michigan fans quickly expressed frustration with the team’s quarterback situation.
Michigan Football Fans React to Benching of Davis Warren
According to On3:
NEWS: Michigan has benched Davis Warren after throwing his 3rd INT (6th of the season) vs. Arkansas State for Alex Orji. The Wolverines are up 21-3 late in the 3rd quarter.
In the season opener against the Fresno State Bulldogs, Warren went 15-of-25 for 118 and one touchdown. He also threw a pick. His struggles carried into last weekend’s ranked matchup against the Texas Longhorns, going 22-of-33 for 204 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. However, his worst performance came on Saturday, with the six-foot-two, 195-pound passer going 11-of-14 for 122 yards and three interceptions. Following his third interception, Michigan football turned to fellow passer Alex Orji, who finished the contest 2-of-4 for 12 yards and a touchdown. He also brings a rushing element to Michigan’s offense, scampering for 27 yards on three carries.
A preferred walk-on with Michigan football, Warren’s first year as the starting signal-caller has resulted in a benching three weeks into the season. Michigan fans were ecstatic with the move, especially those who have clamored for former three-star recruit Alex Orji to take over the offense. Many rushed to social media in anger towards Warren while also praising Michigan for moving forward with Orji:
Should have went w Orji all along

I don’t care if Alex Orji attempts 10 passes a game, he adds more to this offense than Davis Warren could ever dream of. Just run the triple option for all I care, I can’t stand to watch Davis Warren continue to throw the football with the talent of a middle school QB.

Playing Davis Warren is inexcusable for Sherrone Moore at this point. There is no way his “experience” outweighs the talent gap between he and Davis/Orji. #GoBlue

There’s is simply no reason for Davis Warren to be Michigan’s starting QB. Orji, Davis, or even Jack Tuttle. Warren is terrible.

Astounding to me Michigan looked at Davis Warren and Alex Orji, both behind an offensive line that is charitably described as “Sun Belt on a bad day”, and said “we must start the guy who can’t run”

Please just let the Davis Warren project be over.. gimme Orji or Davis. Way more upside. #Michigan #GoBlue

Yep. Just don’t know how Orji doesn’t get a shot at QB1. Davis Warren’s story is incredible. His decision making is not. https://t.co/p47bjr1JEK

Sherrone Moore tried to go with the feel good story in Davis Warren when the better option was Alex Orji. We call that coaching malpractice folks

Alex Orji QB1 rest of the year. Don't show me Davis Warren ever again. https://t.co/QgUjMvkrhl

1st mistake of Sherron’s career was deciding to start a walk on over one of your top recruits coming in. Even if he can’t throw like that you still build your offense to his strengths and work on the passing.

#MichiganFootball won't win six games with this dude at QB. Tough to believe how bad Davis Warren is. Which means that Alex Orji is even worse. Good grief. pic.twitter.com/z3XMLBsqDA
