Michigan confirmed the death of former coach Gary Moeller at the age of 81. While known for his years as head coach with the Wolverines from 1990 – 1994. Moeller was Bo Schembechler’s hand-picked successor, leading Michigan for 5 seasons. A two-time Big Ten coach of the year, Moeller won a conference championship in each of his first three years and had four bowl victories, including the 1993 Rose Bowl over Washington. He’s the only coach ever at Michigan to serve as both OC and DC for the program. He was also the head coach of Illinois from 1977-1979.
After leaving Michigan he was hired by the Bengals in 1995 as their tight ends coach from 1995 – 1996. In 1997 Moeller joined the Detroit Lions staff serving under Bobby Ross, as the linebackers coach. Bobby Ross was fired mid-season in 2000. Moeller became the interim head coach for the final 7 games, going 4 – 3. In 2001 he became the defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars under Tom Coughlin. Moeller only spent one season with the Jags. He then joined the Chicago Bears in 2002 as the linebackers coach a position that he held until 2003 under Dick Jauron.
Gary Moeller was best known though for the 23 years he was associated with the Michigan Wolverines.
