The Michigan Wolverines have a last minute addition to their 2022 defense. Former five star recruit Eyabi Anoma enrolled at Michigan as a grad transfer. This has the potential to be a huge addition for the Wolverines defense who is trying to replace two huge stars on the defensive side of the ball.
Who is Eyabi Anoma?
Anoma was a part of the 2018 recruiting class and was the number 1 defensive end in the nation. He committed to Alabama and earned a spot on the all-SEC freshman team. However, he was dismissed by Nick Saban and the team in 2019. He found his way to the University of Houston but was again dismissed for a violation of team rules. He played for one year at UT-Martin and had a good season compiling 36 tackles, 6 sacks and one blocked kick. While his past is checkered, he seems to have grown as a person and there is no denying that the talent is there. Michigan could have a potential All-American in the former five star recruit.
Will We See Him in 2022?
This is where things get murky. Anoma entered the graduate transfer portal earlier this week. A recently enacted rule says that in order to play in the fall, May 1 is the deadline. This brings in to question his eligibility for this year. Little information is known right now whether he will sit a year or be given some kind of exception to play in the 2022 season. Regardless of whether he plays this season or not, adding another former five star recruit to the defense is a win for Michigan.
Michigan Showing Recruiting Savvy
Much has been made about Michigan’s recruiting strategy. While there are legitimate criticisms, Michigan has also found different ways to stay ahead of the game. Their international recruiting is ahead of where a lot of teams are. They clearly have potential to land grad transfers or other players through the portal. While Michigan will need to adapt moving forward, they are proving they can find other ways to add five star talent.
