Miami Hurricanes football was must-see for any sports fan in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.
The University of Miami also holds a number of NFL draft records, including most first-round selections in a single draft and most consecutive drafts with at least one first-round selection. As of 2024, at least one University of Miami player has been selected in 49 consecutive NFL drafts, dating back to 1975, and 358 Hurricanes have been selected in the NFL Draft overall, the 13th-most among all college football programs.
The Miami Hurricanes are among the most storied and decorated football programs in NCAA history. Miami is ranked fourth on the list of all-time Associated Press National Poll Championships, tied with USC and Ohio State and behind Alabama, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma.
There have been several eras of dominance for the Hurricanes football program, but until this season, they haven’t looked like a serious threat for the national championship in almost two decades.
From the 1980s through mid 2000’s Miami won 5 national championships with former NFL stars like Michael Irvin, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Warren Sapp, Sean Taylor, Frank Gore, Andre Johnson and Clinton Portis emerging as just a few of the NFL stars from those teams.

The former Miami star running back took a step back during his sophomore season, but he bounced back in a major way during his junior year.
In 2001, Portis helped the Miami Hurricanes win the National Championship and had his best collegiate season rushing for 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns on 220 carries. He added 125 receiving yards. In the Rose Bowl against Nebraska, Portis ran for 104 yards and a touchdown.
On a recent podcast, the former Hurricanes star gave a shocking behind the-view glimpse into his recruitment and ultimately his commitment.

“My third visit , I go to Miami, and we in the strip club,” Portis said. “You know we got dancers coming, and I got a dancer on me and this mf look at me and say are you coming?”
Portis said it didn’t take him long to respond considering the circumstances.
“YES!” He said,
“I shook my head yes and titled my head back , eyes rolled back and that’s the last thing I remember.”
The former Miami Hurricanes RB said he didn’t remember committing, but was met by several coaches congratulating him the next morning. F
“And I go to breakfast, I get on the elevator, I’m hungover, and bing, the door opens. One of the coaches walks on and is like ‘aw man congratulations, we heard you committed last night.’ I said huh?”
“We go down one more floor, the next coach gets on and says ‘awww man congratulations, we are so excited you are here.”
Portis then talks about how he turned to his Mom and couldn’t figure out what the coaches were talking about has he had no recollection of committing, but ultimately decided to because all of the coaches were so excited about him.
But ultimately, Portis admitted it was the lap dance from the stripper that pushed him over the edge, not the coaching staff or the Miami Hurricanes football program.
“It wasn’t Miami, it was the lap dance,” Portis said.
Portis was inducted into the Miami Sports Hall of Fame on April 10, 2014.
