This offseason, the NCAA cleared Miami Hurricanes senior Cam McCormick for his ninth college football season. In 2023, an injured-riddled college career positioned McCormick to tie former Northern Illinois linebacker Kyle Pugh for most seasons at the college ranks with eight. However, with the NCAA clearing McCormick for a ninth year, he entered Saturday’s season opener against the Florida Gators with the rare and unprecedented distinction of playing a ninth season.
Florida opened the contest with a punt before Miami walked down the field for an 11-play, 84-yard touchdown drive, capped by a receiving score from Cam McCormick. The 26-year-old entered the game with just four touchdown receptions in his first eight seasons.
Miami Hurricanes TE Cam McCormick Opens Season with Touchdown Reception
The first touchdown for the Miami Hurricanes football team in 2024 belongs to tight end Cam McCormick. With under seven minutes remaining in the first quarter, signal-caller and transfer Cam Ward found McCormick streaking across the middle, with the six-foot-five pass catcher hauling in the pass before knifing up for the endzone. According to Joe Pompliano:
Cam McCormick just scored a touchdown in his ninth year of NCAA eligibility. He arrived in Oregon (with Justin Herbert) during the Obama administration & is now in Miami after multiple season-ending injuries. He is the first player to be given a 9th year.
The first-ever ninth-year senior, Cam McCormick, began playing with the Oregon Ducks in 2016. He redshirted in his first year before snagging six catches for 89 yards and a touchdown in 2017. However, the tight end would miss the next three seasons, all with injury. He finally returned in 2021 but again suffered a season-ending injury after only three games. McCormick played his second complete season in 2022, recording ten receptions for 66 yards and three scores. He transferred to the Miami Hurricanes football team the following season, tallying eight receptions in 2023.
McCormick entered Saturday’s game as a ninth-year senior after the NCAA granted the Oregon native two medical hardship years, a COVID year, and a redshirt year before the 2024 season.
