The Miami Dolphins hoped to have their top four EDGE rushers available and contribute to the 2024 season. Unfortunately, three of their top four EDGE rushers have missed most, if not all, of the 2024 campaign. Jaelan Phillips played the first four games before suffering a season-ending partially torn ACL, while Bradley Chubb hasn’t played due to last season’s ACL, meniscus, and patellar tear, and the Dolphins shut him down with two weeks left.
The Miami Dolphins Pro Bowler retired but changed his mind
Shaq Barrett’s first season in Miami was short-lived. Barrett retired on Saturday, July 20, the week before training camp started. He attempted to unretire and applied for reinstatement on Tuesday, November 26. However, the Dolphins, who own his contract rights, stepped in and refused to grant him reinstatement by not activating him off the reserve/retired list on the Thanksgiving deadline.
The Miami Dolphins have changed course
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Dolphins waived Shaq Barrett from the reserve/retired list, and he will be subject to waivers until Friday. However, as Schefter points out, if a team claims Barrett off waivers, he will be ineligible to play for the remainder of the season, but the team will hold onto his contract rights for 2025. If a team doesn’t claim him off waivers, he will be a free agent, is free to sign with a team in playoff contention, and can play this season.
The Miami Dolphins are waiving former Pro-Bowl edge rusher Shaq Barrett from the Reserve Retired list today. Barrett can play again this season if he clears waivers Friday. If another team claims him, then Barrett would be ineligible to play the rest of this season. “We… pic.twitter.com/RxFEUsYzSd

Drew Rosenhaus released a statement regarding the situation and Shaq Barrett’s goals
“We appreciate the Dolphins giving Shaq this opportunity to continue his career in the NFL,” Rosenhaus told ESPN. “Hopefully, he will pass through waivers and become a free agent so he can play again this season. He is in great shape and would be ready to play immediately.”
