REPORT: Miami Dolphins Inviting Potential Shaq Barrett Replacement for Workout

The Miami Dolphins have an unexpected problem on their hands. Suddenly, they are tasked with finding a replacement for veteran LB Shaq Barrett. Fans were shocked to learn that Barrett announced he was retiring yesterday.

However, recent reports have revealed that the Dolphins may have already found his replacement. Who is replacing Barrett? It is looking like it could be a familiar face for Miami.

According to Cameron Wolfe of the NFL Network, the Miami Dolphins have invited edge rusher Emmanuel Ogbah to work out for the team. Wolfe’s sources revealed that this is expected to happen tomorrow. Right now, Ogbah is still a free agent. However, assuming this workout goes well for Ogbah and the Dolphins, he could potentially get a new contract with the team.

If Ogbah does replace Barrett, it would mean the Dolphins are bringing back a familiar face. Given the sudden situation Miami has found itself in because of Barrett’s shocking retirement, it would make sense to bring somebody back who is familiar with the team.

Ogbah has played with the Dolphins for the last four years. Before that, he won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2019-20 season and spent the three prior years with the Cleveland Browns.

So, how has Ogbah done with the Dolphins? Well, let’s just say there was a reason Miami was not quick to re-sign him. In his last two seasons, Ogbah had just 6.5 sacks and 31 combined tackles. For reference, he had nine sacks and 41 combined tackles in 2022 alone.

Miami Dolphins Moving Forward

Earlier this offseason, the Dolphins thought they struck big when they signed veteran LB Shaq Barrett. He was someone who won two Super Bowls and had nine years of NFL experience to offer. So, it makes sense that the Dolphins are now scrambling to find someone to replace him.

If Ogbah comes back, he will likely have to learn a new defensive scheme. This is because Miami has a new defensive coordinator this season in Anthony Weaver. At first, it looked like the Dolphins were ready to move on from Ogbah. However, Barrett’s sudden retirement could be exactly the second chance that Ogbah needs. We will have to see if he can take advantage of this with his pending workout.
