The Miami Dolphins defense is looking to build off 2024’s solid campaign and Anthony Weaver’s first year as defensive coordinator. Despite the injuries to their defense, Miami finished in the top ten in points allowed, total yards, pass defense, and run defense. One Dolphins player who deserves some credit for his impact on the defensive side of the football is their mid-season acquisition.
The Miami Dolphins mid-season acquisition had a strong finish to 2024

After a rough start to the 2024 campaign with the Seattle Seahawks, the Seahawks released linebacker Tyrel Dodson in Week 11, and the Dolphins claimed him off waivers shortly after. Dodson had a strong finish to the year, filling in very nicely, and standing out in pass coverage. He recorded 36 tackles, three interceptions, and four pass deflections in eight games and three starts, representing 49% of snaps.

The underrated linebacker is a free agent, and since he played well in Weaver’s scheme, it would be logical to retain him on a team-friendly deal.

According to Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports, the Dolphins and Tyrel Dodson have signed a team-friendly multi-year contract extension. As Schultz points out, the deal is for two years and is worth $8.25 million. The expectation is for the 26-year-old Dodson, who turns 27 in June, to compete for the starting inside linebacker job alongside Jordyn Brooks.

The Dolphins will add to the inside linebacker room either in free agency or the draft. Once they add more linebackers to their roster, there will be a competition for the second starting inside linebacker job.
