However, the team had to wait until after June 1 to move him, allowing his $49.448 million in dead money to be spread into the 2026 offseason rather than accelerating into the 2025 offseason and losing $8.552 million in cap space. The Dolphins failed to trade him during mandatory minicamp, and many wondered whether a deal would be in place once training camp begins in late July.

The Miami Dolphins and the Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to a blockbuster trade involving three players and two draft picks. According to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the Steelers acquired Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith, and a 2027 seventh-round pick, and the Dolphins received Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.
