The 1-2 Miami Dolphins have had a disappointing start to the 2024 season due to Tua Tagovailoa sustaining the third concussion of his NFL career. Tua isn’t the only key starter on IR. The Dolphins have ten players on injured reserve and four on the physically unable to perform list. Of the four players on the PUP list, their free-agent acquisition is one of them.
The Miami Dolphins 3x Pro Bowler started the 2024 season on the PUP list
Odell Beckham Jr. opened training camp on the active/PUP list because of an undisclosed injury. OBJ did not participate during camp, and the Dolphins placed him on the reserve/PUP list, meaning he will miss the first four games. Thankfully, he has one more week left (hopefully) and can return to the field soon.
Mike McDaniel revealed an encouraging injury update on OBJ
“I’m optimistic when his window opens up,” McDaniel said regarding Beckham’s return timeline (via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald). “We will see how his body responds. He hasn’t had the setbacks we made sure to avoid.”
There is a chance the Dolphins designate OBJ for return after Week 4 and not be quite ready to play in Week 5. They can open his 21-day practice window, which allows him to practice before being activated to the active roster. Since they have a BYE in Week 6, he could return for Week 7.
Who filled in for Odell Beckham Jr.?
Braxton Berrios has played the role of their defacto WR3 but hasn’t seen the field a lot. Berrios has played 77 (37.02%) offensive snaps, third among wide receivers on the team. He also hasn’t received many targets since Mike McDaniel doesn’t call his number that often, with zero receptions on four targets.
Outside Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, the Dolphins wide receivers have combined for three receptions on 14 targets for 48 yards. Having OBJ back in the lineup couldn’t come at a better time. It’s too bad they have to wait at least another week.
