The Miami Dolphins defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 20-17 in Week One of the 2024 NFL regular season. Tua Tagovailoa, in his first game since signing a four-year $212.4 million contract, completed 23 of 37 passes for 338 yards and a touchdown. Perhaps his biggest contribution to the win, though, came before the game when he helped deescalate a situation between wide receiver Tyreek Hill and the Miami Police Department.
As fans may be well-aware by now, Hill was arrested on his way into Hard Rock Stadium for a traffic violation. According to the Dolphins, Tagovailoa and other players intervened, and Hill was eventually released and allowed to play.
It was a good thing for Miami, too, because he had seven receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown.
Miami Dolphins Wide Receiver Tyreek Hill Appeared to Be Struck by a Police Officer
Despite Hill’s big game, the incident between him and the police is going to be one of the biggest storylines out of Week One across the NFL, and it is not going to go away any time soon.
That is because there is apparently video evidence of Hill being struck by a police officer while he was handcuffed:

Obviously, no one is aware of what exactly transpired between Hill and the police, but striking a person in handcuffs is a terrible abuse of authority. Part of the action in the video is blocked by cars, but the department has begun investigating the incident, as they said in a statement:
“We are aware of the recent detainment of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by Miami-Dade Police Department officers. I have requested an immediate review of all details surrounding the incident, and we are also reviewing available body camera footage. We will provide updates as further information becomes available.”
It did not take long for them to decide that one of the officers involved in Hill’s arrest was in the wrong, as they released another statement shortly after:
“Following the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter. One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation is conducted.”

As one can see from the photo above, Hill incorporated his arrest into his touchdown celebration in the Dolphins’ win over the Jaguars.
After the game, he also took to social media to troll the officer that was placed on administrative leave. The following is a post that Hill retweeted on X (formerly Twitter):

It has yet to be seen what the rest of the investigation will uncover, but Hill certainly seems to have made the best of the situation.
