The Miami Dolphins are in the midst of a quarterback catastrophe.
With Tua Tagovailoa already sidelined as he recovers from a third concussion sustained during his NFL career, leaving his future in doubt, veteran backup Skylar Thompson was knocked out of Sunday’s 24-3 shellacking at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks.
Thompson was far from inspiring before suffering a chest injury, passing for just 107 yards and getting sacked six times.
As things stand, Tim Boyle and Tyler Huntley, recently signed off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad, are the only healthy quarterbacks on the Dolphins roster with the season very much hanging in the balance just three weeks in.
NFL Executive Pleads for Miami Dolphins to Make Bold Move
General manager Chris Grier and the Dolphins need to act if Miami is going to save its season.
One NFL Executive suggests to me that the answer the Dolphins’ woes can be found in Carolina.
“They’re all in and they should trade for Bryce Young,” a high-ranking NFL Executive tells me, on the condition of anonymity to speak freely about another team. “Tua may never play again and Young is perfect for that offense.”
While Young’s first 18 starts leave much to be desired, completing just 59.3 percent of his passing attempts for 3,122 yards with 11 touchdowns to 13 interceptions before being benched in favor of Andy Dalton following the second game of his second season since being Chosen No. 1 overall, perhaps the former Alabama standout is exactly what the Dolphins need in order to get an explosive offense built around Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and a dynamic running game back on track.
“Bryce has the same skill set as Tua,” the executive points out. “Ball placement that allows receivers to work after the catch.”
Carolina has repeatedly turned down multiple trade offers for Young over the past week, but if Grier and the Dolphins share the executive’s optimism that pre-snap motion, star power, and a skill-set similar to Tagovailoa’s can unlock Young’s potential, this would certainly be an option worth exploring for Miami.
