With a new young coaching staff, a few high-profile free agents, and a blockbuster trade, the Miami Dolphins look to make a big push in a stacked AFC. Coach MIke Mcdaniels has plenty of options on the offense, but for the team to make the splash they expect the are going to need one of their young breakout candidates to emerge in 2022.
JAYLEN WADDLE
Jaylen Waddle in 2022 surpassed 100 receptions to break the record for receptions by a rookie and over 1,000 yards. So to think he could be a breakout candidate sounds like a stretch, but Waddle is in a spot to do just that. The second year receiver be lining up alongside Pro Bowler Tyreek Hill who will attract a large amount attention from the defense. One thing Waddle wants to improve is his yards after catch and with Hill taking the top off the defense, he can benefits running the underneath routes.
JAELEN PHILLIPS
This off season most of the attention has been on the offensive moves and the Emmanuel Ogbah signing, but it’s Jaelen Phillips (who has been flying under the radar) that can make the biggest impact on the defense. Last season he recorded 8.5 sacks in the first 13 games of the season. Though he did not record a sack in the last 4 games of the season, we saw glimpses of what the Miami Hurricane alumni is capable of. Bringing in veteran pass rusher Melvin Ingram should allow Phillips to capitalize on the easier match ups.
JEVON HOLLAND
Last season safety Jevon Holland passed the “eye test” with the ability to lock down the middle of the field and play close to the line of scrimmage. He snagged two interceptions and ten pass break ups, earning him an All-Rookie Team honors. With another year on the defense and a pair of Pro Bowl corners to line up with, he is sure to take the next step.
The 2021 draft class has shown the potential to be great, but will it transition on the field is yet to be seen.
