Chanticleers true freshman Matthew McDoom was named the Sun Belt Conference Football Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday. McDoom had perhaps the most electric and game changing play in a 31-27 win over the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs.
With the score knotted 3-3 in the second quarter, McDoom went untouched 95-yards on the kickoff to put Coastal Carolina on top 10-3. The kickoff return for a touchdown is the first of his career.
McDoom and the Chanticleers 95-yard kickoff return was the first since 2016 when Ky’Jon Tyler returned one against Hampton. McDoom’s was also the longest return since Tyler’s of 50 yards in 2017 against Troy. The 95-yard kick return is tied for the fifth-longest scoring play in the history of Coastal Carolina’s program.
McDoom and the Chanticleers return back to action against Buffalo on Saturday at 1pm, as they aim for a 3-0 start to the season.
