McDaniel’s Play Calling: The Upside
Miami Head Coach Mike McDaniel will call the offense this upcoming season. McDaniel takes on those duties for the first time. San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan called the offense, while McDaniel was the run game coordinator last season. McDaniel’s play calling and offense should not be that much different than what San Francisco ran last season. It makes sense to go with what you know.
McDaniel’s knowledge of the offense makes him the right person to call the offense. It also streamlines the process, making things easier for Tua Tagovailoa. Last year Eric Studesville, George Godsey, and Charlie Frye all were involved in calling the offense for the Dolphins. McDaniel being the only voice in Tua’s ear is something Miami’s quarterback must appreiciate. The easier things are for him the better.
What Is the Downside To McDaniel’s Calling The Offense?

The downsides to McDaniel’s calling the offense are not quite as obvious, but there are some. How McDaniel handles calling plays for the first time will be something to watch. Knowing how to delegate tasks is essential for a Head Coach. This being his first time as a head coach at any level how good will McDaniel’s be at dividing things up with his other assistants, so there is not too much on his plate?
Expect McDaniel’s play calling to be run heavy, especially early on, to protect Tua. Will McDaniel know when to be agressive? Miami’s speed at receiver with Tyreke Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Cedrick Wilson has to be taken advantage of as well. Finding the right balance will be critical. The success of McDaniel’s first season in Miami depends on it.
