The Maryland Terrapins lost to the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday night and finished the season 4-8. Maryland will not be heading to a bowl game this season and many wonder if the Terrapins will be making a change at head coach some point this offseason.
Speaking of changes, after the Ohio State Buckeyes lost to the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, there is a chance that Ohio State could fire head coach Ryan Day after the end of the 2024 season. There could be many coaching changes in college football this offseason.
Maryland Terrapins Could Be a Potential Landing Spot For Ryan Day
There is a chance that the Terrapins fire Mike Locksley as head coach at some point this offseason. If Maryland could replace him with Ryan Day of the Ohio State Buckeyes before the start of the 2025 season. John Buhler of fansided.com wrote about seven potential destinations for Day next season if Ohio State let him go.
The Maryland Terrapins are one of those seven potential destinations for Ryan Day. Buhler said:
“If Day were to be out in Columbus, the best potential landing spot for him in the Big Ten might actually be Maryland. Not only do they have Under Armour money, but The DMV is quite the hotbed for recruiting. Maryland is a sleeping giant in the Big Ten, waiting for the day for the right man to take over. I think Day could have even greater success at Maryland than Ralph Friedgen did of yesteryear.
As it is with Purdue, Day already knows what it takes to win at a high level in the Big Ten. While Maryland may be at a resource deficit when compared to Ohio State, because everyone is, it should not be this painfully difficult to have the Terrapins winning eight or nine games a year and vying for a playoff berth in this expanded format every once in a while. Day could be Maryland’s Steve Spurrier.
The upside of winning big at a place at Maryland far exceeds the downside, as this is a decent job.”
It would be better for Ryan Day to start fresh elsewhere anyway. He wouldn’t have the pressure to win with the Maryland Terrapins as he currently does with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Maryland has football talent within its state to recruit.
Last 10 Win Season Was 2003
The last time that the Maryland Terrapins won 10 games in a single season was back in 2003 when they were in the ACC Conference. Ryan Day has won 10 games or more quite a bit with the Ohio State Buckeyes, but no national titles to show for it. A fresh start for Day could provide a potential culture shift in Maryland’s football program.
The Maryland Terrapins fanbase needs something to cheer about. Staying in the BIG10 wouldn’t be the worst move in the world for Day. A fresh start for Maryland and Ohio State football programs is needed.
