With the departure of Grant Wells, the Marshall Thundering Herd will have a new signal caller in 2022. Wells, the starter for the past two seasons, has transferred to Virginia Tech. With the inexperience in the quarterback room, Coach Huff and his staff looked to the portal for help. The Herd coaches found that experience in 6’2″, 205 pound QB out of Texas Tech. His name, Henry Colombi. The Senior will look to spend his final collegiate year leading a Marshall offense, with a lot of explosive weapons returning in 2022.
Who is Henry Colombi?
Colombi has had a long and winding road to Huntington, as the senior signal caller started his career with Utah State. There the QB spent three seasons, in which he played behind a well known starter in Jordan Love. Love of course, is now playing in the National Football League, and was taken in the first round of the 2020 draft by the Packers. Henry Colombi would redshirt his first season, and play minimally in the next two seasons. Colombi would complete 53 of his 69 passing attempts, for 460 yards and two scores. After his sophomore season, Colombi would find a new home in Lubbock, TX.
Colombi at Texas Tech
Once Colombi would leave Utah State, he would find himself in a position battle at Texas Tech. In his two seasons in a Red Raider uniform, Colombi would find himself in a rotation with three different quarterbacks. Even though he would split time with other signal callers, Colombi would make the most of some opportunities. Colombi would get nine total starts in Lubbock, and while racking up 2,356 yards through the air, while throwing 13 touchdown passes, to nine interceptions. Two of those starts would come against West Virginia in back to back years, where the QB was able to defeat the Mountaineers. In 2020, Colombi was efficient in beating the Mountaineers in Lubbock, completing 78% of his passes, while adding 169 yards through the air. The QB would have two scores on the day, one through the air and the other was on the ground.
What will Colombi bring to Marshall?
With the inexperience at the position on the roster, Colombi will bring a lot of experience. This isn’t necessarily in playing time, but adversity. Both stops that Colombi has had at the collegiate level, has involved adversity and waiting for his number to be called. Colombi brings athleticism, as he has shown the ability to beat teams through the air and with his legs. Colombi will look to do something he hasn’t done in his previous stops, win the starting job. If he can do that, he will have a lot of weapons to rely on, with Rasheen Ali and Corey Gammage just to name a few. Marshall will be breaking in a new offensive coordinator in 2022, in Clint Trickett.
Marshall will open the season on September 3rd, in Huntington against Norfolk State.
