With the start of fall camp getting underway for LSU on Thursday the season is officially right around the corner. The running back core for the Tigers is loaded with backs that can compete for the starting position. Listed on LSU’s depth chart under the running back position is: John Emery, Noah Cain, Armoni Goodwin, Kevontre Bradford and Josh Williams. Emery is looking to be the frontrunner of the running back group heading into the 2022 season and will look to finally break out in 2022. With Frank Wilson coming back to LSU as the running backs coach, the sky can be the limit for Emery.
He was a highly-touted five-star recruit coming out of high school. In his senior campaign in high school, he racked up 1,693 yards and 26 touchdowns. Emery’s career hasn’t quite gone the way he had hoped with limited time on the field in 2019 and ruled ineligible for the 2021 season.
Emery’s Career At LSU
Emery was missing out of the Tiger offense in 2021, due to being deemed academically ineligible. He is back with the team now and will look to make an impact with the Tiger offense. The St. Rose native has shown his explosiveness coming out of the backfield and has the ability to make big plays. In his career with the Tigers, Emery has rushed for 566 yards and seven touchdowns.
In his freshman season, Emery rushed for 188 yards and four touchdowns on 39 carries. He also caught six passes for 60 yards. Emery appeared in all games in 2019, but didn’t have any starts, as Clyde Edwards-Helaire was the featured back.
Emery would increase his starts from zero to three heading into his sophomore season in 2020. He would be second on the team in rushing with 378 yards and three touchdowns. Emery would lead all running backs in receiving with 14 receptions for 73 yards.
The star running back is looked at one of the most talented and all-around gifted runners heading into the 2022 season. As long as Emery can stay healthy, LSU fans should have big expectations for the senior running back. Emery is due to have a breakout season and will be the leader of the running back group.
