For NFL and video game fans, the Madden NFL football game has become a normal part of our lives, that we invest time and money in, each and every year. Last week, Madden, released their rankings for the skill positions and teams. These rankings have caused an outrage among NFL and video game fans, alike.
The most important position on the football field is, of course, quarterback. So, in what order did the Madden raters have their quarterback rankings and where were they wrong?
Madden has Tom Brady ranked as the best quarterback in the league. Brady is the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of all Time) in most fans, eyes and is coming off of a season where he lead the lead in passing yards with 5316 yards. Brady was also in the top ten in completion percentage at 67.5%, despite having the most passing attempts in the league last season. Brady was also getting the ball downfield last season, as he averaged 7.4 yards per attempt, which was 12th in the NFL. Strong arguments can be mad for both Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes as the best quarterbacks in the league but having the 45-year old on top of the heap isn’t a bad choice.
On the play below, Tom Brady shows his ability to scan the field and make the right decision, along with throwing a ball about 45 yards with pinpoint accuracy. Amazing that he can still do this at his age.

At number 2, Madden has Green Bay Packers, long time quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. Fans can find a lot of things about Rodgers to have issues with, whether it’s his hair, his stance on being immunized versus vaccinated or what appears to be his smug attitude. When you take away all of that and concentrate on what he does, just on the football field. It’s hard to find any faults with the back to back MVP (Most Valuable Player). Last season, Rodgers threw for 4115 yards, 37 touchdowns, with a completion percentage of 68.9, while only throwing four interceptions. On this play below, Rodgers shows the crazy amount of precision and arm strength, that makes him one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time and still one of, if not the best in the league today.
Aaron Rodgers Is The Most Surgical QB… STILL.
I mean… just a wicked throw from Rodgers. Classic seam ball with defenders back turned. This is AR at his best… And the pass protection was outstanding last night

The third quarterback in the Madden rankings is Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes may be the most physicality gifted quarterback the NFL has ever had, with his combination of arm strength, accuracy, ability to throw on the run, and ability to make something out of nothing.
Patrick Mahomes has been making these plays his whole career:

Last season, Mahomes threw for 4,839 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions, while completing 66.3% of his passes. Mahomes will be without one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the league this year as Tyreek Hill is now with the Miami Dolphins. Will Mahomes prove that he is still worthy of a spot in the best quarterback in the league, conversation.
Buffalo Bills, quarterback, Josh Allen, was ranked as the fourth best quarterback by Madden. Allen being ranked at number four is a good place for him. The former Wyoming Cowboy is also in the conversation for most physically gifted quarterback in the league. Allen has all of the abilities of Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers along with being a huge human being. He is listed at 6’5″, 237 pounds. That size and speed was used as the main ingredient in the Bills’ running game, last season.
Josh Allen Is a TANK:

Josh Allen is such a dynamic talent, that the Bills can have designed run plays for him, like the one above, along with him being one of the best throwers of the football, in the league. Allen threw for 4407 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions, while completing 63% of his passes. Allen also ran for 763 yards. We may have to revisit this list, during the season and give Josh Allen his crown as the best in the league.
The Cincinnati Bengals made a Cinderella like run to the SuperBowl last season, and that was led by the fifth best quarterback in the NFL, according to Madden, Joe Burrow. Burrow doesn’t have the physical tools of the previous three quarterbacks on the list but for what he lacks physically, he makes up for with awareness and accuracy. The former LSU Tiger led the league in both completion percentage, 70.4, and yards per attempt at 9 yards. That is a rare combination of taking risks by going downfield while also being the most accurate quarterback in the league. Burrow earned his spot as a top five quarterback.

This is where the Madden rankings go sideways as the Dallas Cowboys’ signal caller, Dak Prescott makes his appearance as the sixth best quarterback. Prescott had a good season last year from a statistical standpoint. He threw for 4,449 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, while completing 68.8% of his passes.
The Cowboys and Prescott benefited from their schedule as nine of their 12 wins came against teams that missed the playoffs. Now, they can only play who is on the schedule but that easy schedule and high profile of this team has led to Dak Prescott being overrated by Madden. A top six quarterback doesn’t make this mistake in the playoffs to end a game.
Dak Prescott A Top Ten QB?
Dak Prescott ran a QB draw with 14 seconds left and handed the ball to the center, who placed the ball himself.
However, the ref is supposed to spot the ball.
The move cost Dallas a chance at a game-winning play. The 49ers advance.

Last season, the Baltimore Ravens, missed the playoffs for the first time since 2017. It’s not a coincidence that midway through the 2018 season, Lamar Jackson, took over as the starting quarterback and the Ravens haven’t looked back since. Jackson is ranked as the seventh best quarterback in the league, according to Madden, and should be higher, sixth for sure, maybe fifth. Prescott is a very good quarterback and is the engine that makes the offense run for Dallas. Jackson is not only the engine for Baltimore, he is the entire car. Jackson is the reason that offense even exists. The former Louisville Cardinal is the only quarterback in the league who can do this.
Lamar Jackson is still a cheat code:

Coming in at number eight on the list is Los Angeles Charger, stand out, Justin Herbert. Herbert had an outstanding season, last year, throwing for 5014 yards, 38 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions, while completing 65.9% of his passes. A strong argument can be made for Herbert to be at five, six, or seven on this list with what he has done in his first two years. No quarterback, in the history of the NFL, has been more productive in their first two years than Herbert has. If Madden, needs to see more from him, to put him higher on the list, that is understandable. There are also times where only a little bit of evidence is needed to show greatness. Herbert is one of those cases.

At the number nine spot on the list, Madden has the veteran, quarterback, Russell Wilson. Wilson had down year last year as he fought through an injury to his throwing hand. He threw for 3113 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions, while completing 64.8% of his passes. If anyone deserves to have a top ten spot after a down year, its Wilson. In the 2020 season, Wilson threw for 4212 yards, 40 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, while completing 68% of his passes. Wilson still has a great ability to escape along with one of the prettiest deep balls of all time.

In the last spot in the top ten, Madden has the defending SuperBowl champion, quarterback Matthew Stafford. Stafford has always had great talent but was in a situation where he didn’t get to show his talents in big games as he only played in three playoff games, during his time in Detroit. Last season, in his first year with the Rams, Stafford passed for 4886 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 17 touchdowns, while completing 67% of his passes. Some fans will be offended that Stafford is not higher on Madden’s list. An argument can certainly be made for Stafford to be higher but his lack of awareness at times has him at the ten spot.

Stafford has these weird moments where he just doesn’t see the field and throws terrible interceptions. Because of that, him being at number ten, on this list, isn’t far off on the part of Madden.
This is what Madden’s quarterback rankings SHOULD look like.
- Aaron Rodgers
- Patrick Mahomes
- Josh Allen
- Tom Brady
- Joe Burrow
- Lamar Jackson
- Deshaun Watson
- Matthew Stafford
- Justin Herbert
- Russell Wilson
Now of course, when Deshaun Watson’s name comes up, football is not the first thing to come to mind. However on the football field, there are not ten quarterbacks who are better. In the 2020 season, Watson threw for 4823 yards, which led the league, along with 33 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He also completed 70.2% of his passes.
