On Wednesday, the Athletic’s Bruce Feldman released his annual “Freaks” ahead of the 2022 college football season. LSU defensive tackle, Maason Smith, made the list at No. 12. The defensive line for the Tigers in 2022 will be the strong suit of an LSU defense under new management.
According to Feldman, the list is compiled of “the players who generate buzz inside their programs by displaying the unique physical abilities that wow even those who observe gifted athletes every day.”
Smith enters his second year with the LSU defense as he tries to continue his momentum heading into the new season. The star defensive tackle earned 2021 Freshman All-American and 2021 Freshman All-SEC honors for his stellar performance last season.
In his freshman season, he started in four games on the Tiger defense. His first career start would come against Kentucky. Smith’s best game of the season came against McNeese. In that game, Smith recorded six tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks.
The Houma, Louisiana native racked up 19 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks as a true freshman in 2021. His stellar 2021 season has positioned him to be one of the top defensive lineman in college football in 2022.
