LSU was able to develop some depth on the offensive line as they were able to add an experienced piece to the puzzle. According to the Advocate’s Wilson Alexander, Maryland transfer offensive lineman Mason Lunsford signed with the Tigers. He started the last two years and adds depth to the interior offensive line. Brian Kelly and his staff have been looking to bring in an experience interior offensive lineman and he was able to do just that with the addition of Lunsford.
Mason Lunsford’s Time with Maryland:
Before coming to Maryland, Lunsford played multiple positions during his high school career and was the second-highest rate offensive tackle in the state of Maryland. Lunsford was named to the 2018 First Team All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and the 2018 Washington Post All-Met First team selection. The Olney, Maryland native would choose Maryland over Virginia and Army.
In his first year at Maryland in 2019, Lunsford saw limited action on the offensive line as he appeared in just two games throughout the year. His lone appearances during the season came against Howard and Nebraska. Lunsford would decide to use his redshirt as he wasn’t really involved in the offense in his first season.
Heading into his redshirt freshman season in 2020, Lunsford would have his first career start at right guard in the season finale against Rutgers. He would serve a vital role in Maryland having a 458-yard performance against the Scarlet Knights. Lunsford would appear in three out of the five games during the shortened season in 2020.
He would begin to become a focal point of the Maryland offensive line in 2021 as Lunsford started in all 13 games at left guard. Lunsford would block for a record-setting pass offense and protected for the fourth-ranked offense in the Big Ten. In his final season with Maryland, Lunsford was one of the best pass protectors on the team.
Mason Lunsford is Callin’ Baton Rouge:
Lunsford put his name into the transfer portal two weeks ago as he was looking to take his talents elsewhere. The Olney, Maryland native would receive offers from from Arkansas, Houston, Louisville and other programs around the nation. Lunsford will have two years of eligibility and that was part of the push for Kelly to capture the veteran offensive lineman.
Lunsford will join an LSU offensive line that had to rebuild heading into the 2022 season as several key starters declared for the 2022 NFL Draft. The Tigers were able to add some pieces through the transfer portal and through the recruiting trail. LSU their freshman sensations, Emery Jones and Will Campbell, burst onto the college football landscape during their debut season.
Even with the young talent in place at the position, the Tigers still made it their priority to add depth to the offensive line. Lunsford won’t be the only veteran on the roster as Charles Turner and Miles Frazier returns as focal points in the starting lineup.
The purple and gold will also be adding some highly-touted prospects from the Class of 2023 that will be able to fill in the needed holes on their depth chart. LSU did lose Anthony Bradford to the NFL Draft and Kardell Thomas to the transfer portal. With Lunsford entering the mix, the offensive line room looks to be one of the strongsuits for the Tigers heading into the 2023 season.
