Los Angeles Rams: Reunited With a Familiar Face Ahead of Week 2

Injuries have decimated the Los Angeles Rams cornerback room since training camp started. Derion Kendrick exited the first day of training camp with an apparent knee injury. An MRI confirmed that he had torn his ACL, and he is out for the season. Kendrick was in contention for a starting outside cornerback spot.

Tre Tomlinson suffered an undisclosed injury during training camp. The Rams placed him on injured reserve during roster cuts, and he will miss the entire season because they already used up their two injured reserve/designated for return slots, hence the new roles. Tomlinson was in contention for a backup spot on the 53-man roster.

Their free-agent acquisition will miss the first four games.

Darious Williams suffered a hamstring injury on their second day of training camp and missed over a month of practice. He returned to practice as a limited participant last Wednesday but aggravated his hamstring. An MRI revealed his hamstring isn’t 100%, and the Rams decided to place him on injured reserve last Thursday. Sean McVay hopes to have him back by Week 5, but they will play it safe.

His backup suffered an injury in Week 1.

Cobie Durant had an exceptional Week 1 performance, recording three tackles, one pass deflection (almost his first interception of the regular season), an 80.8 coverage grade, and an 82.7 PFF grade. He allowed two receptions on three targets for 14 yards and zero touchdowns. At some point, he suffered a toe injury, and Sean McVay considers his injury as day-to-day.

Durant did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. Los Angeles, concerned with their cornerback depth, signed a player to their practice squad.

The Rams made a flurry of roster moves on Wednesday, placing three players on injured reserve, signing two to the active roster, and signing Ahkello Witherspoon to the practice squad. Witherspoon recorded 52 tackles, three interceptions, and 14 pass deflections in his lone season with the Rams in 2023. It’s unclear whether they will promote him for game day.

Undrafted rookie Josh Wallace will likely start if Cobie Durant cannot play.
