After briefly flirting with a trade around the NFL Combine, the Los Angeles Rams committed to franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Stafford and the Rams agreed to terms on reworked contract that will keep him in Los Angeles for at least one more season. However, while it might be easy for the Rams to begin thinking about life after Stafford, in 2026 and beyond, head coach Sean McVay admitted he isn’t spending much time on any of the quarterbacks in this year’s class.
“I think that’s I think that’s unlikely,” McVay told reporters at the NFL Annual Meeting. “I’ll be honest with you, I haven’t done a whole lot of work on the quarterbacks. I feel really good about where our quarterback room is, even though we’re not naive to the fact that Matthew hopefully got a couple more years that he wants to play. But he’s also learned the right to be able to say, ‘after this year, hey, I’m gonna, I’m gonna go ahead and hang them up.’ I’m hopeful that that’s not the case, but I haven’t done enough work to really have an educated opinion on that. That’s not something that I would see us going, but maybe not.”

Last season, Stafford passed for 3,762 yards with 20 touchdowns to eight interceptions while guiding the Rams to an NFC Divisional Playoff appearance, and even at age 37, still seems to have quality football in front of him.
At least for one more year, the Rams aren’t looking to the future but rather building around Stafford before considering turning the page to a rookie and potential successor.
