There was a time when Kelly, Matthew Stafford’s wife, can be seen supporting the Los Angeles Rams during their games at home. The thing is, she wasn’t seen in the team’s Week 1 match against the Detroit Lions for a good reason.
In a thrilling season opener, the Lions edged out the Rams with a score of 26-20 in overtime at Ford Field. David Montgomery’s 1-yard touchdown run secured the victory after a fierce battle, marking a memorable rematch of their previous playoff encounter.
The Lions initially seized control with a 17-3 lead in the third quarter, highlighted by quarterback Jared Goff’s impressive 52-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Williams. However, the Rams rallied back, with Stafford connecting with Cooper Kupp for a 9-yard touchdown that put Los Angeles ahead late in the fourth quarter. Despite this, the Lions managed to tie the game with a 32-yard field goal from Jake Bates in the final minute, forcing overtime.
Winning the coin toss proved crucial for Detroit, which swiftly moved the ball down the field, gaining at least nine yards on each of their first four plays in overtime. This offensive momentum set the stage for Montgomery’s decisive score.
The Reason Why Matthew Stafford’s Wife Didn’t Attend Los Angeles Rams’ Game Against Detroit Lions
Instead of being present for the Rams’ season opener against Detroit, Kelly chose not to attend at all. In an article by Andrew Holleran for The Spun, the quarterback’s wife explained why.
“Kelly Stafford is refusing to attend Sunday night’s game because of what happened during the NFC Wild Card Game in January 2024. Kelly Stafford and her children had boos going their way prior to kickoff.
This very much upset Mrs. Stafford.
“This was our experience on the field,” Kelly Stafford said. “I know you are booing me, but my kids don’t know the difference even if I try to explain it to them.”
Stafford opted out of attending a recent game due to her discomfort with the team’s performance and the pressure it places on her family. She expressed her struggles with the emotional toll that comes with being part of a professional sports family, particularly what her kids hear and see during games.
Next week, the Rams will look to bounce back as they face the Arizona Cardinals, hoping to capitalize on the lessons learned from this hard-fought loss. In any case, it would seem that Stafford wouldn’t have his family cheering him on for the time being.
