It looks like the Carolina Panthers aren’t going anywhere this season, leading to another lost year for Diontae Johnson. That could all change if the Los Angeles Rams or New England Patriots make a move to get the wide receiver.
Johnson began his football journey at Earl J. Lennard High School in Ruskin, Florida, before attending the University of Toledo, where he excelled from 2015 to 2018. During his college career, he recorded impressive stats, including 135 receptions for 2,235 yards and 23 touchdowns.
In the 2019 NFL Draft, Johnson was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round. He made an immediate impact, debuting against the New England Patriots and scoring his first touchdown in a game against the San Francisco 49ers. Over the years with the Steelers, he became known for his reliable hands and playmaking ability, culminating in a Pro Bowl selection in 2021.
Johnson’s professional career has seen significant milestones, including a notable contract extension in 2022 worth over $36 million. However, he faced challenges, such as a hamstring injury that sidelined him for part of the 2023 season. After successfully returning to the field, he ended the season with 51 receptions and five touchdowns.
In March 2024, Johnson was traded to the Carolina Panthers, where he aims to continue his development and contribute to his new team. His journey reflects resilience and skill, positioning him as a key player in the league.
Los Angeles Rams, New England Patriots Identified as Possible Teams That Can Trade for Carolina Panthers’ Diontae Johnson
As it stands, Johnson has been involved in trade rumors these past few days. According Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, the Rams and Patriots are the two teams projected to make a move on him.
“Still, the 28-year-old will be a free agent next offseason and could be a valuable trade chip if Carolina continues to flounder.
Receiver-needy teams could use Johnson, who caught 51 passes for 717 yards and five touchdowns as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ No. 2 receiver last year. The Los Angeles Rams, who now have both Kupp (ankle) and Nacua (knee) on the injury list, could be at the forefront of interested teams.
The New England Patriots may also want to consider pursuing Johnson. New England still lacks reliable receiver depth, but after a 1-1 start—and the Week 2 loss coming in overtime—the Patriots are more competitive than most expected,” Knox wrote.
The Panthers brought in Johnson to serve as their primary receiver, but he has recorded only five catches for 34 yards in the first two weeks. The entire offense has faced challenges, leading to the decision to bench rookie quarterback Bryce Young in favor of veteran Andy Dalton.
Johnson’s future remains uncertain as trade rumors swirl around him. Despite his potential to boost production with veteran quarterback Andy Dalton, the Panthers may consider moving him if their struggles continue. With the Rams and Patriots lurking around, a trade could be possible, depending on how these teams navigate their current situations.
