Insult is being added to injury for the Los Angeles Rams after their week two loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
After safety John Johnson III suffered a shoulder injury and was placed on injured reserve Monday, NFL insider Adam Schefter is now reporting that star wide receiver Cooper Kupp could be in the same boat due to an ankle injury. Guard Jonah Jackson is also expected to miss significant time due to a shoulder injury.
The loss of WR Puka Nacua caused the Los Angeles Rams to overuse WR Cooper Kupp
The past two weeks for the Rams have shown how quickly issues can compound upon themselves in the NFL. The Rams lost breakout second-year WR Puka Nacua in week one against the Detroit Lions and it directly resulted in Kupp’s subsequent injury.
Nacua is on injured reserve after a PCL injury and it left Kupp to carry the load through week one and week two. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Kupp led the NFL with 50 routes run, 21 targets and 14 interceptions in week one. Kupp was also used as a key blocker in certain situations in a role that not many receivers embrace the way he does.
You wanna know why Cooper Kupp is the best receiver in football when he’s healthy? Because he literally does it all. There is not one receiver who does as much as Cooper. Most are dominate at 1 or 2 things. Cooper Kupp literally does everything at a dominating level. This man has… pic.twitter.com/O0WPC2AKi1

Kupp was the focal point of the Rams offense after Nacua’s injury before the snap and during the play. He was actively in motion at the time of the snap on 30 plays, the highest in the NFL. He ran a staggering 436 yards before the snap, the second-most by any player since 2018.
The Los Angeles Rams will have to run through someone
Kupp only had six more targets and four more receptions against the Cardinals before suffering the injury. The Rams will now have to scramble to find another offensive focal point while trying to keep their head above water until their top two playmakers return.
Head coach Sean McVay’s offensive philosophy revolves around using high rates of motion involving key playmakers. This type of offense forces the defense to key in on guys that are constantly moving, allowing those key players to not only get more space but draw the attention of the defense and free up other players.
With no Kupp or Nacua, WRs like Tyler Johnson, Demarcus Robinson and Tutu Atwell will have to step up. Robinson currently leads all other WRs in targets with 11, but Johnson is close behind with 10.
Quarterback Matt Stafford explained the importance of persevering through injury after week one in an article from the Rams’ website.
“I was really proud of the way those guys (the offensive line) played, to be honest with you. There were some unfortunate things that happened, you know, up front, with guys getting injured and not being able to come back in the game, and those guys battled through.” – Stafford
