After three years as a starter for the Los Angeles Chargers, there’s reason to believe that Asante Samuel Jr. has earned the right to bag a big contract. According to an NFL analysis, though, that can just happen during the free agency of 2025.
Samuel has emerged as a key player for the Los Angeles Chargers since being drafted in the second round, showcasing his skills as a top cornerback. After a notable college career at Florida State and a promising rookie season cut short by injury, Samuel has consistently recorded impressive statistics, including double-digit pass breakups each year.
In 2023, he achieved career highs with 63 total tackles and 13 pass breakups, along with two interceptions. Entering his fourth season, Samuel is expected to lead the Chargers’ secondary under new defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.
However, his aggressive playing style has resulted in a higher rate of penalties, which could affect the team’s overall performance. At 6 feet tall, he often faces challenges against larger receivers, necessitating a more physical approach that can sometimes backfire.
Los Angeles Chargers’ Asante Samuel Jr. Projected to Fetch $75 Million in 2025 Free Agency
Much like New York Jets’ Haason Reddick and Houston Texans’ Stefon Diggs, Samuel is also projected to garner a lot of interest in free agency next year. This can be seen in an NFL analysis David Kenyon wrote for Bleacher Report.
“There’s a chance that Samuel will have another career year in 2024, though. New Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has traditionally built his teams around strong line play, a good running game and a stout defense.
Staying healthy could also play a big factor in Samuel’s market value. Health hasn’t been an issue over the last two years, but he missed five games as a rookie due to a series of concussions.
If all goes well this season, Samuel could have the most efficient season of his career, emerge as a Pro Bowler and, potentially, become the top corner in an impressive pool. Should that happen, Samuel will have a chance to top the four-year, $76.4 million deal that L’Jarius Sneed signed this offseason.
Projected Contract Value: Four Years, $75 Million,” Kenyon wrote.
Heading into the 2024 season, Samuel is the Chargers’ number one cornerback and will partner with newcomer Kristian Fulton. If he can reduce his penalties while maintaining his instinctive play, he is poised for a breakout season with the potential for high interception and pass breakup totals.
Overall, Samuel’s ability to balance his aggressive style with discipline will be crucial for his development and the success of the Chargers’ defense in the upcoming season. His trajectory suggests he could solidify his position as one of the league’s rising stars, especially if he bags a good contract in free agency next year.
