Despite adding Tyler Conklin, the Los Angeles Chargers could still use some help at tight end. They currently have five players under contract, including one on the International Pathway Program (IPP), but only one, Will Dissly, is under contract through 2026. Since they don’t have long-term stability, the Chargers could select one very early in the upcoming draft, hoping they become their number one tight end of the future.

Los Angeles Chargers hosting a premier tight end from SEC

According to Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network, the Chargers are hosting former LSU Tigers tight end Mason Taylor for a Top-30 visit on Thursday. He is the son of Miami Dolphins Hall of Famer Jason Taylor and the nephew of fellow Dolphins Hall of Famer Zach Thomas. As Fowler points out, Taylor is a premier player at the position and has some buzz as a potential Day 1 draft pick.

He had a solid career with LSU

Mason Taylor committed to the LSU Tigers as a three-star recruit for the 2022 season. Taylor had a solid career with LSU, with 129 receptions for 1,308 yards and six touchdowns in 38 games, and finished as the all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards among tight ends in Tigers history. His accolades include being named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2022 and Third-Team All-SEC in 2024
Taylor had his best statistical season during his junior year, boasting career highs in receptions and yards. He had 55 receptions for 546 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games. He finished third on the team in receptions and yards.
Here’s Lance Zierlein‘s scouting report on Mason Taylor

“Ascending tight end with plus catch talent and Hall of Fame bloodlines. With just three seasons under Taylor’s belt, more growth is expected in both his game and frame.
“He’s a smooth athlete with adequate acceleration and the tools to become a more effective route runner in time. He feels defenders around him and catches with sudden hands and elevated focus when needed.
“He can handle blocking duties on the move or in space, but in-line action will be a challenge for him. His game needs polish, but Taylor has the ability to become a higher-volume target for a team looking to upgrade at the “F” tight end spot.”
Zierlein predicts that Taylor will become a good starter within his first two years in the NFL.
