The Los Angeles Chargers continue to make free agency moves with the signing of defensive lineman Teair Tart.
Tart was recently released by the Miami Dolphins after spending just four months with the team.
Miami Dolphins HC explained the release of Teair Tart, allowing the Los Angeles Chargers to pick him up
Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel explained why Tart was only with the team for four months in an article from A to Z Sports.
McDaniel said Tart wasn’t a good fit from a scheme standpoint, which causes many fans to question why the Dolphins would sign him in the first place.
“Just one of those situations where you can see that from a scheme standpoint it’s not totally a fit,” McDaniel said. “And when you know that you have a veteran player that has ambitions that maybe as a coaching staff we can see it might not fit, we try to be proactive with that so he has the opportunity to – wish him well at his next place, but he has an opportunity at his next place to do what we know he wants to do.”
The Dolphins were not completely blind on Tart when they signed him. Tart has been in the league since 2020 and has 36 starts under his belt. The Dolphins’ defensive scheme has not changed dramatically since the signing of Tart, which could imply there was something else at play.
Teair Tart will provide great value to the Los Angeles Chargers
The signing of Tart will provide great value to the Chargers, who are working with a thin interior defensive line.
While Tart may not be able to be considered a “veteran presence” just yet, he will provide on-field depth and impact to an interior defensive line headlined by Morgan Fox, Otito Ogbonnia and Poona Ford.
Tart is a big inside body that isn’t known for his pass-rushing abilities. Tart is a run-stopping defensive tackle that clogs up the interior of the line making it hard for the opposing team to run downhill all game.
His most productive season by far was in 2022 when he amassed 24 tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery and 1.5 sacks. He had a 73.1 Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade in 2022 and he has failed to achieve a PFF grade above 60 in any other year.
Los Angeles Chargers fans who know who Teair Tart is are excited about the signing
The Chargers signing of Tart isn’t a massive free agency splash that will turn all the heads of the NFL world, but fans who know what Tart can bring to a defense expressed their excitement regarding the Tart signing via social media.
