The 2025 edition of the US Open had a memorable finish that will be talked about for a long time. At the end of the tournament at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, it was JJ Spaun, who raised the trophy and claimed the $4.3 million in prize money. It was a proud moment not just for Spaun, who wasn’t considered a favorite to win the event, but for his friends, family – and even for the Los Angeles Chargers.
Spaun, who is born in Los Angeles, overcame the tough competition, a bad start to the fourth round and the elements at Oakmont.
After recording four bogeys in the first five holes on Sunday, Spaun steadily and surely worked to steady his game, as he rounded out the seven holes with four birdies, including on the 18th hole, where he drained an incredible 64½-foot birdie putt to walk away with the victory.
Aside from being born in LA, Spaun, who is of Filipino descent, also attended San Diego State University in college.

Los Angeles Chargers react to Spaun’s first major win

The Chargers were ecstatic over Spaun’s win, as they sent out a post on X (formerly Twitter) that read: “shoutout to socal’s own @JJSpaun 👏”
The Chargers can perhaps also learn a thing or two from Spaun’s unexpected win, as he showed everyone that anyone can pull off a surprise. Los Angeles will be among the teams to watch in the AFC in 2025, as the team looks to dethrone the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West division.
The Chargers finished second in the division in 2024 with an 11-6 record during Jim Harbaugh’s first season at the helm.
