As the 2025 NFL season approaches, there are certain expectations for Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs. After an impressive 2024 season, where he scored a franchise-record 20 touchdowns, analysts are now predicting a dip in his scoring for the upcoming year.

ESPN’s analysis suggests that while Gibbs is a talented player capable of making a significant impact, the likelihood of him matching or exceeding last season’s touchdown total is slim. Factors contributing to this prediction include his reliance on scoring opportunities inside the five-yard line, where he was not the primary ball-carrier compared to teammate David Montgomery. With a projected drop to around 14 touchdowns, the conversation shifts to how Detroit will adjust its offensive strategies.

Gibbs’ rise to prominence has been remarkable, showcasing his agility and ability to change the dynamics of a game. His performance last season, where he averaged 5.65 yards per carry, solidified his role as a key player in Detroit’s offensive scheme. Fans are hopeful that his skill set will still allow him to contribute significantly, even if the touchdown numbers decline.

Despite the potential regression, Gibbs remains a vital part of the team’s plans for success in 2025. His versatility as a runner and receiver makes him a valuable asset, especially in a high-powered offense. The coaching staff has expressed confidence in his abilities, indicating that they will continue to utilize him effectively throughout the season.

As it stands, Gibbs is predicted to have fewer touchdowns next season. This is detailed more in an analysis by Mike Clay for ESPN.

    2024 TDs: 20
    2025 Projected TDs: 14

Gibbs exploded for 20 touchdowns last season, and if he reaches that mark again, he’ll be only the sixth player in NFL history to achieve that feat. Gibbs was substantially above his expected TD total (13.2) and well behind David Montgomery in carries inside the 5-yard line when both were active (17 to 11). Even in a terrific Detroit offense, a dip is likely.

The Lions’ overall offensive talent also plays a role in Gibbs’ projected performance. With other playmakers emerging, the distribution of touchdowns may shift, impacting Gibbs’ scoring chances. However, if he can maintain his efficiency and adapt to the evolving game plan, he could still be a top contributor.

While projections indicate a likely decrease in touchdowns for Jahmyr Gibbs in the 2025 season, his potential to impact games remains strong. As he navigates the challenges ahead, his performance could still be pivotal for the Lions’ success.
