This week’s edition of Monday Night Football between the Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49ers was a shootout. The offenses came out of the gate swinging and continued to rack up points until the clock expired. Detroit did not have any reason to go out and try to win this game since they had already clinched a playoff berth; yet, they still looked determined to grind out a tough win on the road. The final score read 40-34 in favor of the Lions. Forty was the magic number that has etched this Detroit team in the history books.
Lions New Record
The Lions’ offense was clicking on all cylinders Monday night. They were able to tally up forty points while not turning the ball over once. Last night marked the fifth time this season that Detroit has put up 40 points with zero turnovers, the most ever in an NFL season. It is dangerous to see a team with an offense this high-powered that takes care of the ball exceptionally well. They have so many weapons on that side of the ball; this was made abundantly clear last night.
Offensive Threats
En route to their historic scoring night, the Lions managed to get four different players into the end zone. Jared Goff threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. They spread the wealth evenly, with St. Brown, LaPorta, and Williams all going over 60 yards receiving and a touchdown apiece. Consistency is what makes this team tough to beat; players like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs are both in the top six in the league statistically among receivers and running backs.
Moving Forward
As we look ahead to the final week of the regular season, the Lions are preparing to take on another top-tier team in the Minnesota Vikings. This is a significant matchup for these two teams, as the winner will claim the number one seed in the NFC. Detroit won their first meeting earlier in the year, but the Vikings are out for revenge and the top spot in the conference. The stage is set for a critical Sunday Night Football game next week, a game with high stakes and expectations.
