President Donald Trump showed up at Northwest Stadium Sunday for the Commanders-Lions matchup as the first sitting president of the USA. But unfortunately, his special cameo drew mixed reactions, especially from the Commanders crowd.

While boos echoed through the Landover venue during his arrival, the visiting Lions group embraced the historic moment. Head Coach Dan Campbell’s reaction is enough to make it clear how the Lions feel about the president.

Dan Campbell Had No Problem with Donald Trump Showing Up at Commanders-Lions Matchup

The atmosphere inside Northwest Stadium turned hostile when Commanders fans booed Trump during a military enlistment ceremony at halftime. Social media erupted with criticism of the jeers during what was meant to honor service members. But across the field, the Motor City visitors felt differently about the commander-in-chief’s presence.

Campbell admitted he was too locked into the game to notice Trump’s arrival. “When I’m in this place, I don’t even know what’s going on around me half the time,” he said. “It was either defense is out there or I’m trying to get the plays ready for the offense, so I didn’t even know”.

When told about the presidential attendance, Campbell responded, “That’s cool. You’re talking about the president of the United States. That’s a big deal.” His laid-back reaction stood in sharp contrast to the boos raining down from the home crowd.

The students also hold the same feelings as their teacher. For example, take wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown into consideration, who celebrated his touchdown with the “Trump dance,” pointing toward the president’s suite before mimicking his signature moves.

So, St. Brown had to explain his unique celebration after the game. The press didn’t miss asking the question. He replied, “I heard Trump was going to be at the game. I don’t know how many times the president’s going to be at the game, so I just decided to have some fun.”

Receiver Jameson Williams, who had six catches for 119 yards and a touchdown, praised head coach Dan Campbell’s play-calling. “Shout-out to Dan and how he controlled the game,” Williams said. “It was kind of funny seeing him with the glasses. It’s a different look, for sure.” Williams was likely referring to his coach’s style change for the VIP guest

Linebacker Trevor Nowaske shared his excitement before kickoff about playing in front of the president. “That’ll be cool. I did not know he was going to be there, but that’ll be super-cool to have the president. That’ll be something I’ll be able to tell my kids,” he said.

Not a single Lions player or coach expressed negativity about Trump attending their game. Their postgame comments centered on the magnificent 44-22 victory and Campbell’s strategic adjustments.

Now 6–3, Detroit heads to Philadelphia next Sunday for the biggest test since the defending Super Bowl champion is going to be their opponent. It will be interesting to see how they handle the Eagles’ atmosphere.
