Leonard Fournette showed at mini camp at least 30 pounds overweight. His listed playing weight is 228 pounds but sources say he came in weighing at least 260. This is not a good look especially being that he just signed a new contract with the Buccaneers this off-season. They agreed to $21 million over 3 years with $12 million guaranteed.
Buccaneers’ Reaction To Fournette:
The Buccaneers can’t be happy with the situation. Being out of shape slows down the progress he could make this off-season cause instead of the main focus being on their gameplay and executing plays, his and the coaches focus will now be on getting him physically ready for the season and cutting weight. Not only does it slow progress but it also makes him more vulnerable to injuries such as muscle tears or tendons. There’s nothing wrong with taking a little time off during the off-season but part of your job is to stay in shape year round and show up in condition and ready to perform.
I believe he will be ok and his teammates and coaches will stay behind him and help if needed. Hopefully this doesn’t become a pattern though because his teammates deserve a ready to play teammate in return. I will keep you up to date on any news as it comes in.
