What was Lee Corso’s Final Headgear Pick? CFB Legend Retires After Week 1 Selection

College football has been one of the sports filled with tradition and one of them is seeing who Lee Corso would select with headgear pick. It was announced that the 29-year tradition would be ending at Week 1 of the 2025 college football season as the legendary analyst and coach is reitiring at 90 years old.

But who did he select as the final headgear pick of his career? Let’s take a closer look into what happened.

Lee Corso’s Final Headgear Selection

Kirk Herbstreit gives response on Ohio State in first CFB Playoff Rankings
ESPN’s Lee Corso, center, waves his hand after putting the Ohio State Buckeyes mascot head on to end “College GameDay” Saturday at Notre Dame. To the left is actor Vince Vaughn, and to the right is ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit.

The college football world is going to look a lot different on Saturday mornings not seeing Lee Corso end the pregame show with a selection of which team he believed would win the biggest game of the week in front of the home crowd. The tradition dates back to Week 7 of the 1996 season when he selected the Ohio State Buckeyes to defeat the Penn State Nittany Lions.

The tradition continued, and there have been unofficial websites keeping track of his picks throughout the years. It appears Lee Corso has been incredible at picking winners as he holds a 286-144 record all-time heading into his final pick. With Week 1’s game being the Texas Longhorns vs. the Ohio State Buckeyes, Lee Corso went back to the well and chose the reigning national champions as his final headgear pick.

There is not going to be another Lee Corso to grace our television screens but College GameDay will continue to march on. Congratulations for an incredible career in front of the camera to one of America’s favorite college football personalities. It will be interesting to see if the Buckeyes could give him a victory to end his career.
