Not many were expecting Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley to make a serious impact with his new team in his first season after leaving the New York Giants. Barkley had by far the best year of his NFL career in 2024 and helped the Eagles win a Lombardi Trophy.

He looked like he was the best running back in the NFL all season long. Barkley did not look washed at all, and he no doubt potentially has a lot of juice left in the tank. Before the 2024 season, he was ranked as a Top 100 player as a member of the Giants, but there is a chance that he could be ranked very high after his first season with the Eagles.

Grant Gordon, who is a digital content editor for nfl.com listed several different candidates to be the number one ranked NFL player, as voted by the players entering the 2025 NFL season. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was voted as the number one player in the NFL before the 2024 NFL season.

There is a world where Barkley can be the number one ranked player entering the 2025 NFL season. Gordon said about the Eagles superstar running back,

    ”

    • 2024 AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year became ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in regular season
    • Keyed Eagles’ Super Bowl run, racking up 2,504 yards (including playoffs) to set a new league record
    • Last year’s Top 100 ranking: No. 86″

It would be an amazing jump for Barkley if he went from 86 to number one. It would be a surprise if he was not in the Top 5. During the 2024 season with Philadelphia, he rushed for 2,005 yards on 345 carries and 13 touchdowns, along with averaging 5.8 yards per carry. Barkley also caught 33 passes for 278 yards receiving and two touchdowns, along with averaging 8.4 yards per reception.

Philadelphia needs to hope he can stay healthy once again during the 2025 NFL season in the backfield. If he doesn’t, the offense could look entirely different without him. The Eagles star running back however needs to be in consideration for the number one spot in the NFL’s Top 100 players.
