Last offseason, the Las Vegas Raiders signed quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a three-year, $67.5 million contract. After eight games and lackluster results, Las Vegas moved on from the former first-round pick. The Raiders released Garoppolo this offseason, leaving only former fourth-round pick and 2023 rookie Aidan O’Connell in the quarterback room. To the surprise of many, Las Vegas did not draft a signal-caller in the 2024 NFL Draft, nor did they make a massive splash in free agency, opting for a journeyman passer, Gardner Minshew.
On Sunday, in their season opener, the Las Vegas Raiders displayed an abysmal offensive showing, losing 22-10 in the contest. They did not record a turnover while fumbling twice and throwing an interception. General manager Tom Telesco trended on Twitter in the fallout of the division defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Las Vegas Raiders GM Tom Telesco Trends On Twitter
According to one Las Vegas Raiders fan on Twitter:
Telesco already said this is a stepping-stone year. Next year is the year you compete.
Although some Las Vegas Raiders fans are content with Sunday’s showing, many remain dumbfounded a day after getting blown out on the road against a division rival. More importantly, many of these same fans are pointing the finger at General Manager Tom Telesco for not selecting a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft nor improving the roster enough this offseason. Telesco operated as the Los Angeles Chargers GM from 2013 to 2023 before the AFC West franchise fired him following a franchise worse 63-21 loss.
Despite a disastrous finish in Los Angeles, including winning zero playoff games with rookie quarterback Justin Herbert on his first deal, the Raiders signed Telesco this offseason to pair him with new head coach Antonio Pierce. Not only did Las Vegas Raiders fans go after Telesco postgame, but the Chargers faithful did not hide their emotions after handing the team’s former GM his first loss. In the defeat, Las Vegas allowed six sacks, rushed for only 71 yards, and surrendered a brutal 6.5 yards per rush attempt.
