The Las Vegas Raiders will open next year with a new quarterback under center for the third straight season. On Wednesday, reports surfaced that Las Vegas will release quarterback Gardner Minshew at the start of the new league year. Following a failed campaign with fellow passer Jimmy Garoppolo in 2023, the Raiders turned to Minshew last season. Fresh off a Pro Bowl nod, Minshew struggled mightily, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns for the first time in his NFL career.
With Minshew out in Las Vegas after just one season, the Raiders have just two quarterbacks under contract, Aidan O’Connell and Carter Bradley. Immediately following his release, Raiders fans flooded Twitter with excitement, especially with the prospect of selecting his replacement, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, in the first round.
Las Vegas Raiders Fans Want Shedeur Sanders

According to Tom Pelissero on Twitter:
The #Raiders informed QB Gardner Minshew they’ll release him when the new league year begins next Wednesday, per sources.
Minshew has 46 career starts and is still only 28 years old. An experienced option is available.
The Las Vegas Raiders are done with quarterback Gardner Minshew after just one season. Left on the roster is 2023 fourth-round pick Aidan O’Connell and 2024 undrafted free agent Carter Bradley. With O’Connell unimpressive during his first two seasons and Bradley unseasoned, many fans wanted the Raiders to select a quarterback with the sixth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Likely available early in the first round will be former Colorado football megastar, Shedeur Sanders. A Heisman Trophy Award vote-getter last season and the Big 12 leader in passing yards, touchdowns, and rating, Sanders would be the first top quarterback pick by the Raiders since JaMarcus Russell in 2007 (longtime starter Derek Carr was a second-round pick). The idea of adding Sanders has many Raiders fans excited for next month’s draft:

Sanders Fresh Off Elite Season

In his second season with Colorado football last year, quarterback Shedeur Sanders posted program-defining numbers. He set the school’s record for passing yards in a single season with 4,134 while tossing 37 touchdowns and owning a 168.2 rating. His 71.8% completion percentage is the highest in FBS history among passers with at least 875 attempts.
Per NFL Draft Buzz, he is the second-ranked quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft and a likely top-ten pick. With the Las Vegas Raiders holding the sixth overall selection and needing a quarterback, Sanders has become popular in mock drafts.
