On Saturday, The Las Vegas Raiders fell to the Minnesota Vikings 24-23 in their preseason opener. More importantly, Las Vegas received a solid showing from the quarterback duo of Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell as they continued to battle for the starting job. Minshew went 6-of-12 for 117 yards and a passing touchdown, while O’Connell completed 7-of-9 passes for 76 yards while playing turnover-free football. However, third-string passer Anthony Brown took three sacks on six dropbacks, completing 1-of-3 passes. On Tuesday, the Raiders added Nathan Peterman to their active roster to strengthen their quarterback depth.
Peterman will begin his second stint with the Las Vegas Raiders after spending 2020 to 2021 with the AFC West club. In a corresponding move, the Raiders waived wide receiver Keelan Doss. The UC Davis product has posted 17 receptions across three NFL seasons.
Nathan Peterman: Rejoins Las Vegas Raiders
On Tuesday, the Las Vegas Raiders signed quarterback Nathan Peterman. A former fifth-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2017, Peterman started two games as a rookie, including throwing a record five interceptions in his first career start against the Los Angeles Chargers. Peterman returned to Buffalo the following season, going 0-2 as a starter while throwing for one touchdown and seven interceptions. The Bills moved on from Peteroman before the 2019 season, with the Raiders adding him to their practice squad.

Peterman did not see action during his first season with the Raiders but inked a futures contract for the 2019 campaign. He threw five passes in relief. The Pittsburgh product returned to Las Vegas in 2020 on an original-round restricted tender deal but did not attempt a pass. Peterman spent the past two seasons with the Chicago Bears, going 14-of-25 for 139 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. Peterman latched onto the New Orleans Saints this offseason before returning to the Las Vegas Raiders.
Raiders: Updated QB Depth Chart
Outside the top passing combination of Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell, newly signed quarterback Nathan Peterman will compete for a backup role alongside Anthony Brown and rookie Carter Bradley. Peterman owns a career 39.3 quarterback rating with four passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Meanwhile, Brown, a former undrafted free agent in 2022, has tallied 302 passing yards, two interceptions, and no touchdowns on 22-of-49 passing. Brown started for the Oregon Ducks in 2021. As for Bradley, the South Alabama product threw for 47 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in his final two college seasons. Bradley did not attempt a pass in the team’s preseason opener.
Minshew and O’Connell remain deadlocked in a position battle, with reports indicating the former has a leg up in the competition. Minshew earned Pro Bowl honors last season after throwing 15 touchdowns against nine picks and nearly leading the Indianapolis Colts to the postseason. As a rookie last season, O’Connell guided the Raiders to a 5-5 record and threw 12 touchdowns to seven interceptions.
