Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams has been a hot name on social media for the last few days. Of course, much of it has been the result of him being one of the featured players in Netflix’s Receiver documentary, which followed a handful of NFL pass catchers through the 2023 season. That being said, it has also been because of some comments both Adams and New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers have made about the possibility of reuniting.
As many are well-aware, the reason why Rodgers and Adams did not continue playing together on the Green Bay Packers was because Adams asked to be traded to the Raiders following the 2021 NFL season. His contract had expired in Green Bay and he did not want to play on the franchise tag the Packers put on him.
Going to play for Las Vegas meant that Adams would be able to play closer to his family. His grandparents, who had never seen him play in person while he was in Green Bay, finally got to attend one of his games. He also got to play with his college teammate and quarterback, Derek Carr. However, it has not been all sunshine and rainbows for the All-Pro wide receiver.
Davante Adams Has Produced While the Rest of the Las Vegas Raiders Offense Has Not
In his first season with the Raiders, in 2022, Adams had 100 receptions for 1,516 yards and an NFL-leading 14 touchdowns. He was named to his sixth-consecutive Pro Bowl and third-straight First Team All-Pro.
His good friend, Derek Carr, however, did not make it through Adams’ first season in Las Vegas. He was sent home early while the regular season was still going on. During the offseason, he was released and before signing with the New Orleans Saints.
2023, the year that Netflix followed Adams for the Receiver documentary, saw the Raiders enter the season with Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback. He, too, did not last long before being replace by Brian Hoyer and Aidan O’Connell.
That year also saw Adams put up productive numbers, but not as noteworthy as he had been accustomed to. He had 103 receptions for 1,144 yards and eight touchdowns but did not make the Pro Bowl nor was he named to an All-Pro Team.
Footage from the Receiver documentary clearly showed that Adams was not having a good time in 2023, and at one point he expressed concern over his physical safety.
Las Vegas Raiders Wide Receiver Davante Adams Was Scared for His Life in 2023
The following clip from Netflix’s Receiver went viral on social media on Thursday night (warning: foul language):
Dear Davante Adams,
The Pittsburgh Steelers would love to have you pic.twitter.com/eZv1gHbfqR— Jarrett Bailey (@JBaileyNFL) July 11, 2024
“I got to get the f— out of here before I lose my f—ing life. I have never been hit this many f—ing times in my career. Every game I get f—ed up,” Adams said.
Shortly after the game in which the clip was filmed ended, Garoppolo was benched, a move that more footage from the documentary showed Adams signed off on.
Hopefully he has a better go of it with O’Connell in 2024.
