The Las Vegas Raiders are in Week 3 of training camp. They practice on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, marking their last practice at Costa Mesa, California. Afterward, the Raiders travel to U.S. Bank Stadium to face off against the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday at 3:00 P.M. CT for their first preseason game.
Cornerback is a position to monitor throughout training camp and preseason. Two starting cornerback spots are locked in as Jack Jones looks to start on the left side while Nate Hobbs looks to start in the slot, leaving the right side vacant. Their former fourth-round pick previously held the starting spot.
The Las Vegas Raiders 2020 draft pick departed in free agency
Amik Robertson signed with the Lions in free agency. After not playing much in his first two seasons with the Raiders, Robertson saw extended playing time in 2022, starting seven of 17 games. He also saw significant playing time in 2023, starting 12 of 17 games.
One young corner has stepped up.
The Las Vegas Raiders second-year player has emerged as the favorite to start
Jakorian Bennett started the first four games of his rookie season. He fell out of the rotation due to a hamstring and shoulder injury and struggled, ranking 124th out of 127 qualified players.
Bennett focused on getting better heading into Year 2. So far, he has impressed throughout spring practices and the first few weeks of training camp. As a result, he received first-team reps and is considered the favorite to start alongside Jack Jones.
Antonio Pierce is impressed by his efforts.
“You know what, because he had a rough rookie year, right?” Pierce said. “He started, played some games, got nicked up. Then he’s on the bench, some other guys come in. So, you go through those ups and downs as a rookie and I think he’s really done a great job this year just mentally preparing himself of, ‘Hey, whatever it is, I have to deal with it.’ And when you get the opportunity to make plays, make those plays.
“He had a great two plays yesterday tipping the ball, one was an interception, but just overall his confidence is slowly building and growing. And I just think that that room overall with Jack [Jones] and Nate [Hobbs] in there and [Brandon] Facyson, they’re doing a good job of mentoring him.”
Their rookie will also compete for the starting spot
Decamerion Richardson played college football for the Mississippi State Bulldogs from 2020-2023. He played 45 games with 26 starts and recorded 177 tackles and ten pass deflections. The Raiders drafted him 112th overall in the fourth round.
Similar to Bennett, he has stood out in training camp. He will compete for the starting spot.
